New film release | Borderline

Production is currently in progress on the horror-thriller Borderline, which is being filmed across locations in the U.K. and Malta.

The film stars Lucien Laviscount (Emily in Paris), Laura Marano (The Royal Treatment) and Cynthia Khalifeh (8 Days), with Jason Flemyng (A Violent Man) rounding out the principal cast.

Khalifeh portrays Zena, a young woman who turns up at the Borderline pub to meet Jack, a date she connected with via an app. When it becomes clear that Jack is not coming, Zena is persuaded to stay for a drink by Paul, a seemingly awkward but affable local played by Laviscount. Beneath Paul’s disarming charm, however, lies a far more sinister reality: he is a serial killer who draws his victims into the Borderline, a place beyond the reach of law or consequence.

The film marks the first chapter of a planned horror franchise. It is directed by Jane Gull, whose debut My Feral Heart earned a British Independent Film Award nomination, and written by Elizabeth Morris (Above the Below). Producing duties are handled by Martin Owen alongside producer-actor Evan Ross and Khalifeh. Executive producers include Jeff Rice and Maria Breese of Jeff Rice Films, Jeff Most and Matthew Stedman of Level Field Media, as well as Jenny Shakeshaft, Nick Cortezi and Paul Parker Films.

Owen described Borderline as a bold entry into the genre, highlighting its high production values and strong performances. He noted that the film explores the darker implications of modern dating culture, tapping into the anxieties surrounding dating apps in a way that is both unsettling and gripping, with the ambition of launching a new franchise.

Ross echoed that sentiment, saying the team was thrilled to bring the project to life. He pointed to the film’s distinctive tone and central concept, which examines the most dangerous extremes of contemporary dating, and expressed confidence that it will connect with horror audiences around the world.
